Kaikoura (in Maori kai means food and koura means crayfish) is on the east coast of the South Island- a peninsula town surrounded by snow capped mountains (most of the year) and teeming with marine life and tons of birds because of a massive slope right off the coast creating a huge shelf that plunges 800m. This brings in seals, whales, dolphins, albatross and other rare sea birds, so many fish and of course, TONS of crayfish. The town itself is small and catered to the whale watching business. We had a fantastic three days exploring the town, coast and sea.
